WORKBOOK / INSTRUCTIONS

Design the path, then check the budget.

The two workbook tabs become this guide and the interactive loss-budget workspace. Start with receiver requirements and include every passive loss between the transmitter and receiver.

Set up the project

Enter the customer, project, contact and equipment details. Set fiber, splice and connector loss rates for the system you are designing.

Defaults from the workbook: 0.106 dB / 1,000 ft, 0.05 dB / fusion splice, and 0.2 dB / connector. Changing distance units converts both distance and the fiber rate.

Build a receiver path

Add one node for each complete source-to-receiver path. Enter its full fiber distance, splice and connector counts, total splitter insertion loss, source power, and receiver attenuator.

Output count and split percentage are reference fields. Total splitter loss is entered directly, as in the workbook. The optional ideal estimate excludes excess insertion loss.

Work in either direction

Received power: subtract path and attenuator loss from TX launch power.

Required TX power: add all losses to the receiver target.

Fiber distance: solve the length that reaches the specified receiver target.

Attenuator loss: calculate the attenuation needed to reach that target. A negative result is reported as unattainable with an attenuator.

Compare, save & verify

Enter receiver minimum and maximum values to see path margin and overload status. CNR must come from a measurement or equipment data; the workbook contains no CNR formula.

Projects save in this browser. Download a project to reopen it elsewhere, export the node table as CSV, or print a report. Before system turnup, test the circuit with an optical source and power meter, as the workbook recommends.

The Instructions sheet also mentions a BOM QUOTE tab. No such tab or pricing data exists in the supplied two-tab workbook, so this tool contains no quote or discount calculation. Splitter loss and CNR remain manual inputs. Inverse solving, receiver limits, diagrams and exports are web-tool additions.
